Our Mission is to carry out applied research in the area of healthcare organizations’ management with the aim to support clinician’s and manager’s in their efforts to improve the performance of operating rooms departments.

Operating rooms departments represent high-risk areas of hospitals, in terms of cost increase, level of patient safety, and participation to the overall goal of any health care organization, i.e. to increase the level of health of a local community. At the same time, in many hospitals this department is considered as a black box: what happens inside is mainly known through anecdotal information, that varies amongst the stakeholders involved depending on their backgrounds, interests and perception. This lack of objective measurement and the consequently incapacity to rationalize the decision making processes, create serious frictions amongst the different stakeholders involved surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, administrative managers, support staff, with the risk to take decisions that sub optimize performance. For “performance” we mean both effectiveness, in terms of patient safety while at the operating room facility and health after the operating procedure, and efficiency, i.e. the correct use of scarce resources.

The research team consists of experienced experts of different professional fields (medicine, management and engineering). This guarantees an interdisciplinary approach that ensures that all aspects concerning both problem setting and problem solving are duly considered in order to increase both the effectiveness and legitimacy of suggested solutions.

Operating Rooms are usually managed like 'sayling by sight' because an objective data basis is already missing. This lack of information and the consequently resulting incapacity of rationality within decision making processes create serious problems to clinicians and managers which has to be solved as soon as possible.
